- Benefits
Walnut is a great source of energy. It contains many nutrients, minerals, anti-oxidants, and vitamins. It is rich in saturated fatty acids (nearly 72%) such as oleic acid. It is a great source of essential fatty acids, e.g. Omega 3, linoleic acid, alpha linoleic acid, and arachidonic acids. Its constant use helps reduce total cholesterol. Studies show that the Mediterranean diet that is rich in saturate mono acids and omega 3 fatty acids, prevents coronary cardiac diseases and heart attacks. Using almost 25 g walnut each day provides 90% of the omega 3 fatty acids. Walnut is an excellent source of photochemicals, such as melatonin, that are potentially protective against cancer, aging, inflations, and neurological diseases. It is also a good source of vitamin E, especially gamma-tocopherol, which is required to protect the skin against free radicals in oxygen. Furthermore, its oil is used in traditional medicine as the carrying oil, as well as in massage therapy, aromatherapy, cosmetics and medicines. A daily consumption of 30 g is sufficient. - Storage and Use
If not broken open and when kept in a dry place, walnut can last long (normally up to a year). People must follow health safety considerations when buying and using this product because it is rich in fat and this fat oxidizes when exposed to heat, which in turn changes its taste and composition. Its seed is soft and becomes stale when kept too long, turning yellowish or brownish and developing an unpleasant taste. At this stage, it can lead to food poisoning and must not be used. For this reason, it should be kept in closed containers in the freezer. - Weight/Packaging Unit
